Scanned negatives looked better than the same scanned prints - once you've figured out how to force the software to work. The USB 2.0 connection works well and the scanned resolution is excellent. 3rd party software works for the 3200 (twice the price of he 3170) but NOT the 3170 - I looked at two packages neither works with the 3170. Note that the 3200 and the Canon both support firewire while the 3170 does not (usb 2.0).īAD: The software is poor: color management is poor convenience is poor, and automatic modes generate useless garbage. From reviews the Canon didn't seem much better and I couldn't figure out what all was improved on the 3200 so when I found a 3170 on sale for $50 off I bought it. I chose the 3170 based on resolution (for negatives) and price. This is half rant and half review after scanning twenty rolls or so of color 35mm negatives on an Epson 3170.įirst off, I bought the scanner to digitize some of our old pictures using negatives when available and prints when not. Having spent the last two weeks wrestling with the Epson 3170 "perfection" scanner I thought I would pass on my experience to help anyone owning or thinking of owning this scanner.
